Sears tower 'gets green makeover'

The Sears tower in Chicago is due to undergo a green refurbishment with a view to reducing energy use by ten per cent.

Building reports that the scheme is at a planning stage, but it is thought that solar photovoltaics and wind turbines will be put on the roof to provide a renewable source of energy.

Speaking at the Cityscape conference partner of Adrian Smith + Gordon Gill Architecture, which is carrying out the work - Adrian Smith said that lighting systems, extra insulation and a green roof will also be added.

The news provider stated that former London mayor Ken Livingstone chaired the conference and stated that retrofitting of certain commercial properties and public buildings during his tenure in the capital had seen 25 per cent drops in energy use.

Earlier in the years, the UK's largest bank HSBC announced that it had installed a large solar array on the roof of its London headquarters, which it is thought will boost the building's energy efficiency.
