Winter sports resort receives government backing

Government support for sports resort

Plans for Europe's first indoor winter sports resort have received backing from the secretary of state for communities and local government.

Led by developer Onslow Suffolk, the proposed £350 million SnOasis scheme is set to be built in the Suffolk village of Great Blakenham near Ispwich.

Although Hazel Blears has said the development will have a "very positive" effect on employment and the local economy, she has expressed concerns over its impact on the environment, the Eastern Daily Press reports.

In addition to the world's largest ski slope, an ice rink, bobsleigh track and cross-country ski run, the proposed development would include a 200-bed hostel for school parties, 350-bed four star hotel, log cabins and retail and leisure facilities.

Godfrey Spanner, managing director at Onslow Suffolk, said: "My nightmare is over, now my dream can begin. We have been working on this project for six years, with costs running into many millions."

A final decision about the development will be reached by Ms Blears by September 17th.
