Warning for when choosing tradesman

Tradesmen should be chosen carefully

When choosing tradesmen to improve your house it is vitally important to ensure they do the job correctly to avoid future complications.

A recent survey has found that more Brits are choosing to hire someone in for home improvements rather than doing DIY.

RatedPeople.com, a directory for recommended tradesman, found that 2.7 million people in Britain have decided to stay put in 2008, due to uncertainty in the housing market.

Many of these people will look for good certified builders to do improvements on their current home.

However the work needs to be done properly and to a high quality standard otherwise you could suffer dire consequences.

Andrew Skipwith, co-founder of RatedPeople.com, said "If you walk into a house and someone's been altering it but they haven't done it particularly well, you can actually damage the value of your property."

Poor quality work can leave homeowners upset as well as ripped off, with the possibility that they will have to pay to get it done properly, especially if the house is habited at the time.

Mr Skipwith gave words of warning to people looking for a tradesman saying: "If you're going to spend any money or any time improving your house, it's crucially important to have it done right."

The average UK household spends £900 on home improvements, with the entire sector worth more than £23 billion, according to market analyst Datamonitor.
