Southampton shipyard redevelopment approved

The South East England Development Agency (SEEDA) and Southampton council have given the go-ahead for the £500 million redevelopment of the former Vosper Thornycroft shipyard in the city.
Crest Nicholson Regeneration's plans for the Centenary Quay site include a hotel, offices, supermarket, more than 1,600 homes, three waterfront apartment towers and a public plaza.
Boat builder Palmer Johnson plans to set up a marine employment quarter at the other element of the site.
The council's economic development cabinet member, Royston Smith, said the design must be appropriate to existing surroundings.
He added: "The council has always held a shared vision with SEEDA to see Woolston Riverside regenerated and revitalised.
"With the marine employment quarter also going ahead the city has just taken a giant leap towards a new era of economic growth."
Crest Nicholson is a developer of sustainable communities and last year won the Queen's Award for Enterprise in Sustainable Development.
