Environmental issues 'could be hit by credit crunch'

Credit crunch hits eco issues

Concerns relating to environmental issues could be at risk of being pushed to one side as the effects of the global economic downturn become more pressing.

According to the Financial Times, the commercial property sector, which accounts for half of all the UK's carbon emissions, may be forced to drop green issues down the agenda.

However, those working within the commercial property have stated that the government should introduce requirements for those who occupy buildings to take better control of sustainability as opposed to relying on developers to achieve this.

The news provider states, that the All Party Urban Development Group, which is a cross-party parliamentary group, previously advocated the implementation of a single international benchmark to assess the impact of buildings on the environment.

In related commercial property news, Reita recently stated that there has been heavy interest in Real Estate Investment Trusts from foreign investors in the past 18 months.
