Bristol regeneration plans abandoned

An ambitious plan to regenerate a site in the centre of Bristol has been shelved because it would cost taxpayers to much money.
A mixed-use scheme, including a 10,000-seat arena, had been planned for a site near to Bristol Temple Meads railway station.
But with the final sum totalling £86 million the city council has decided it is not value for money.
Ian Knight, the area director of the South West of England Regional Development Agency, revealed his disappointment that the plans were not given the go-ahead.
He said: "We are very disappointed that it has not proved feasible to build an arena for Bristol, but the latest figures show that it would simply not be a good use of public money.
"We were always supportive of including an arena in this development - but not at any price," he added.
Meanwhile, Luton's shopping centre, the Mall, could be set for a major redevelopment adding 400,000 extra square feet of retail property to the area.
