Aldi and Travelodge 'in development team up'

Supermaket hotel tie up

Budget brands Aldi and Travelodge have announced plans to team up in order to develop joint supermarket and hotel sites around the UK.

It is understood that one of the first developments will see Travelodge build a 74-bed hotel above Aldi's 14,500 sq ft store in Newquay, Cornwall.

Another project is reportedly to take place in Middlesbrough when a 55-bed hotel will open next to Aldi's supermarket in the city.

"The credit crunch is freeing up sites for development that previously would not have been viable for either of us," said Paul Harvey, managing director for development at Travelodge.

He added that with the budget sector of the industry is set to grow by around 30 per cent in the next few years and Aldi due to open 1,500 new stores it is a good time for companies that are committed to driving down costs for customers.

Last week, luxury hotel brand Jumeirah Group announced that it is looking to open a 26-storey five star hotel in Glasgow, which would be the first UK development outside Europe.
